Monday 06 February 2006 - They're at it again, Server re-location, What do you do?
They're at it again

Thats right folks. Seems BT weren't content with giving me connectivity problems before. They've decided to do it again, or to be more precise - have them continue.

I woke up yesterday afternoon to find the connection had gone down. After 5 attempts to get it back online, I went straight to the PlusNet exchange checker and what did I find?
Virtual paths: Red

BT is reporting that some of the virtual paths at this exchange are not operating within BT Wholesale's planning guidance, although they are still operating within the product specification.

At busy times, your ADSL connection may operate at a reduced speed, although not all customers on your exchange may be affected. You should only contact support if there is no current ETA date set.

The ETA fix time is: 16 Feb 06
So as a notice, should you find there are connectivity or timeout issues with the Intranet, or whilst loading the site's hosted on the main it-mate.co.uk servers, please feel free to have a go at BT on my behalf (sure will be doing that myself this morning as this is getting terribly frustrating now).

Server re-location

I do however, have some good news!. The move from Server 2000 to Server 2003 went extremely well. Though unavailable for a few minutes whilst the hard drive was transferred to the new machine, the Intranet is now up and running perfectly.

It should be noted however, due to the move, you may find certain files are not in the same location as before. For example, the download URL for Ur I.T. Mate Group products, is no longer;

/itm_downloads/[filename]

Instead, it is now;

downloads.mysteryfcm.co.uk/[program]/[version]/[filename]

This was done to allow the downloads location to turn into more of an archive, due to requests for access to older versions.

The old Intranet server is to be cleaned out and formatted in the next 24-48 hours. Once completed, the SMTP server will also be moved from the XP machine it is currently running on, to either Server 2000 or Server 2003 (haven't decided which yet).

What do you do?

Living in the North East (though sure it happens everywhere else too), I am now used to the rather frequent times when I suddenly feel the urge to kill someone at the electricity board. You know those times, when you are working on a document or something and as if by magic (or a bad joke by the guy at the electricity board, sitting at the console thinking "who shall I annoy today?"), the lights go out, the computer seems to go on holiday, and you suddenly turn into a sadist, with thoughts of chaining the guy to a wall whilst you shove a hot poker into various parts of his body (or is that just me?).

Well to my suprise, I came accross something on the Bitwise magazine today that mirrors the exact feelings we all go through, and naturally, thought I would share it with those of you that don't yet read Huw's columns.
